This study shows the amount of blood flow in the carotid arteries, which are the major blood vessels to the brain located on either side of the neck. It identifies narrowing restrictions due to Arteriosclerosis, which develops with aging, hypertension, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia.

This test may be used to evaluate patients who have experienced a stroke, or as a preventative measure for those who may be at risk of a stroke.
